About Us
Allunga Exposure Laboratory began operations at Townsville, on Australia’s tropical North-East coast, in 1969.
Since then Townsville’s harsh tropical climate, and the experience and expertise of Allunga’s staff, have made Allunga a global reference site for weathering tests and durability studies.
Our staff are ready to discuss all aspects of durability testing, and to assist, if required, with ithe design of weathering tests of all types.
Australian clients may be able to use our charges as part of their application for Industrial Research and Development incentives.
Allunga is an independent, NATA accredited laboratory, and all testing and research programs undertaken by Allunga Exposure Laboratory are strictly confidential.

Australian and international clients currently use Allunga’s exposure and reporting services to evaluate the performance of a wide range of materials.
These include coatings, paints, plastics, rubbers, textiles and fibres, pigments, dyestuffs, resins, additives, UV-absorbers, decals, sealants and adhesives, building and packaging materials, composite materials, auto components, photo-active materials, etc.
Base of operations
Allunga’s main laboratory and exposure facilities are based at Brookhill, about 20 km from the centre of Townsville and 12 km from Cleveland Bay and the Coral Sea.
What gives Townsville its dubious title of ‘Australia’s skin cancer capital’ also makes it an ideal location for weathering tests.
With its clear sunny days, moist dewy nights, and low latitude of 19° south, the city has high average daily solar radiation levels with only slight seasonal variation.
Townsville, in fact, averages total global solar radiation levels of approximately 7500MJ/m² per year, and UV-R levels of approximately 400 MJ/m² (below 385 nm.) per year.
Special purpose exposure sites
Allunga also operates three separate special-purpose exposure sites in tropical northern Australia :
- Mould/Biocide evaluation exposure site near Tully, in a high-rainfall, high-humidity, tropical environment.
- Corrosion/Marine/Littoral exposure site on the shore of the Coral Sea at Halifax Bay 60km north of Townsville.
- Arid Tropical site near Hughenden in north-western Queensland, characterised by low-rainfall, low-humidity, high-radiation, high temperature variation climate.
Infrastructure
As Australia’s largest tropical city, and the largest city north of Brisbane, Townsville offers the flexibility of an established transport hub and major research facilities (university, institute of marine science, and Australia’s premier scientific research facility CSIRO).
